Reliance Industries’ Sustainability and Environmental Initiatives

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has integrated sustainability into its core business strategy. As India’s largest private-sector enterprise, it recognizes its responsibility to mitigate environmental impact and transition toward greener energy solutions.

Net Zero Commitment

RIL has pledged to become net carbon zero by 2035. This ambitious goal includes reducing emissions across its operations, investing in renewable energy, and adopting carbon capture and utilization technologies.

Renewable Energy Initiatives

Reliance is investing over ₹75,000 crore in renewable energy projects. The Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex in Jamnagar is a key initiative, featuring:

  • Integrated solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing

  • Energy storage systems

  • Green hydrogen production facilities

These projects aim to produce 100 GW of renewable energy by 2030, helping India meet its climate goals.

Circular Economy and Recycling

RIL leads in polymer recycling and sustainable fabrics. Its R|Elan™ brand promotes eco-friendly textiles made from recycled PET bottles. In addition, the company has implemented plastic waste management programs to recycle and reuse materials, minimizing landfill waste.

Energy Efficiency and Emissions Reduction

Reliance has improved energy efficiency in its refining and petrochemical operations, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It employs advanced technologies for waste heat recovery, process optimization, and water conservation.

Social and Community Impact

RIL’s sustainability programs include biodiversity conservation, afforestation, and water resource management in communities surrounding its plants. The Reliance Foundation drives rural development, healthcare, and education initiatives aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

By focusing on sustainability, RIL is not only safeguarding the environment but also ensuring long-term business resilience and contributing to India’s sustainable growth trajectory.
